CAPE TOWN'S INDEPENDENT ART SCENE: Janine Lessing's Solographs

In the very competitive South African art scene, many budding "hobby" artists who have created some absolutely fascinating artworks are making these available to the public in small, personal exhibitions at locations such as their homes or temporarily rented spaces. CynaminArt is excited to be part of this exhibition, even in just the small way of having done the printing for this upcoming independent exhibition! Janine herself is the brainchild behind this fascinating style of photography, and has put together and is hosting her first exhibition. A very talented lady, one to keep an eye on....

Janine Lessing, introduced: "Janine is Cape Town based and has a day job to pay the bills. In her spare time she devotes a lot of energy to her interest in photography. Over the last few years, she has increasingly moved away from conventional photography, which she finds too sterile and perfect. She now likes building her own cameras and exploring new ways of capturing the world around her in a more abstract and intimate way. Pinhole and solargraphy are a particular focus at this stage.

Solargraphs are created with simple pinhole technology and record the sun's path across the sky and through the seasons. Tiny home made pinhole cameras (with photographic paper inside as "film") are fixed in position and then abandoned to the mercies of the elements, luck and even the occasional vandal. Once they are harvested (they stay out there anything from a day to six months ... or even longer!), the resultant negatives are processed and rainbows of sun lines are revealed together with some foreground detail. Solargraph images are unlike anything that we can observe with our own senses and evidences the passing of time, the tilt and spin of our planet, and the life giving power of our earth star - the sun."
